April 9, 2010-- (Bethany, OK)--- The newest feature on The Children's Center internet video channel, HopeTV, recounts the heartbreak and heroism of a teenager's recovery after a motor vehicle accident in Enid last year. The story gives an emotional account of 16-year-old Jasmine Cartwright's experience at the Center's Pediatric Medical Rehabilitation Unit (PMRU). The PMRU is a unique regional facility in Bethany, Oklahoma, that treats children and adolescents who have experienced a traumatic incident resulting in a brain and/or spinal cord injury.
Cartwright suffered a brain injury and broken bones in the September pickup truck accident. The feature explains how the teenager, described by her mother as "a miracle baby" suddenly "woke up" in the Unit, weeks after the accident.
"It was very reassuring to hear them say that everything was going to be okay," Jasmine said.
The story entitled "Jasmine's Second Chance" also explains the trauma and recovery from a parent's perspective. Maria Rosa Cartwright, Jasmine's mother, said the outlook for her daughter initially looked dire.
"The whole time she was in the ICU I wasn't hoping much because she was in bad, bad shape," she said. "They said, 'you're going to The Children's Center and that's a great place, and you're gonna recover little-by-little,' and that's what she did."
In the video, Jasmine's mother also credits the PMRU staff for providing unique care and support. Specifically, she mentions a maintenance worker who committed to pray for Jasmine's healing every day.
Jasmine stayed one month at the Center and was discharged in November 2009. She received medical care, physical, music and recreational therapies, as well as speech/language pathology and other services. Her health is restored and she is living at home in Enid.
god bless you jasmine, my dream is to become a nurse and provide the care love and support that you received.
