Paul Schrader - the leading intellectual of Cinema today, sort of American Godard. And very underrated director too.

I would equate him to Godard but Schrader is an incredibly talented Director...Utterly Underrated!!Light sleeper is a fantastic film Dafoe is an underrated actor what a perf he gives here!!!

Thanks for the reaction. What I meant is, Schrader, just like Godard, is an unashamedly intellectual author - stylistically there are no similarities whatsoever, I'd say.

And, you're absolutely right - a real filmmaker.

I agree, as he is my favorite director above all others personally, though many would esteem him an American Bergman rather than an American Godard, and even being deemed an American Bergman would sound better being fitted to David Lynch, but the influence is there. Schrader is a real filmmaker, a man with stories to tell, not just flashy images to shoot which comprise most films today.
