John Patrick's Covenant Baptism took place today June 15, 2008 at Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Overland Park, Kansas http://www.redeemer-pca.org a reception followed at Lidia's Kansas City http://www.lidias-kc.com
The Westminster Confession of Faith states:
CHAP. XXVIII. - Of Baptism.
1. Baptism is a sacrament of the new testament, ordained by Jesus Christ, not only for the solemn admission of the party baptized into the visible Church; but also to be unto him a sign and seal of the covenant of grace, of his ingrafting into Christ, of regeneration, of remission of sins, and of his giving up unto God, through Jesus Christ, to walk in newness of life. Which sacrament is, by Christ's own appointment, to be continued in His Church until the end of the world.
2. The outward element to be used in this sacrament is water, wherewith the party is to be baptized, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, by a minister of the Gospel, lawfully called thereunto.
3. Dipping of the person into the water is not necessary; but Baptism is rightly administered by pouring, or sprinkling water upon the person.
4. Not only those that do actually profess faith in and obedience unto Christ, but also the infants of one, or both, believing parents, are to be baptized.
5. Although it be a great sin to condemn or neglect his ordinance, yet grace and salvation are not so inseparably annexed unto it, as that no person can be regenerated, or saved, without it: or, that all that are baptized are undoubtedly regenerated.
6. The efficacy of Baptism is not tied to that moment of time wherein it is administered; yet, notwithstanding, by the right use of this ordinance, the grace promised is not only offered, but really exhibited, and conferred, by the Holy Ghost, to such (whether of age or infants) as that grace belongeth unto, according to the counsel of God's own will, in His appointed time.
7. The sacrament of Baptism is but once to be administered unto any person.
And from the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) BOOK OF CHURCH ORDER
The minister shall then read the covenant promises:
For to you is the promise, and to your children, and to all
that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call
unto him. And I will establish my covenant between me and thee
and thy seed after thee throughout their generations for an
everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee and to thy seed after
thee. Believe on the Lord Jesus, and thou shalt be saved, thou
and thy house. (Acts 2:39; Gen. 17:7; Acts 16:31)
The minister shall then propose the following questions:
1. Do you acknowledge your child's need of the cleansing blood
of Jesus Christ, and the renewing grace of the Holy Spirit?
2. Do you claim God's covenant promises in (his) behalf, and do
you look in faith to the Lord Jesus Christ for (his) salvation,
as you do for your own?
3. Do you now unreservedly dedicate your child to God, and
promise, in humble reliance upon divine grace, that you will
endeavor to set before (him) a godly example, that you will
pray with and for (him), that you will teach (him) the
doctrines of our holy religion, and that you will strive, by all
the means of God's appointment, to bring (him) up in the
nurture and admonition of the Lord?
Do you as a congregation undertake the responsibility of
assisting the parents in the Christian nurture of this child?
Then the minister is to pray for a blessing to attend this ordinance,
after which, calling the child by name, he shall say:
I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit.
As he pronounces these words, he is to baptize the child with water,
by pouring or sprinkling it on the head of the child, without adding any other
ceremony; and the whole shall be concluded with prayer.
