The World Music Ensemble program at the UF School of Music is composed of ensembles committed to high standards of performance and the aesthetic development of Latin American and African musical traditions. Tonight's "World Music Festival" brings the official inauguration of our new "Near Eastern Orchestra" ensemble. Organized by our graduate student Hicham Chami, the ensemble brings fresh air into the program and soothing Arabic repertoires. In addition, we also bring back our marimba ensemble "Marimba Ayin", directed by Brian Holder, our own former student and now a faculty member at Santa Fe College. Despite all of the emphasis put on academics and writing in the discipline of ethnomusicology it is important to consider that "world music ensembles" expands possibilities and new training grounds for students to be exposed to music culture environments, to acquire fresh knowledge and experience, by getting hands-on many unusual musical instruments and sound concepts.
