2010 Rogers Cup Quarterfinal Match Point: Federer vs. Berdych (Aug. 13)

A very dramatic end to this quarterfinal tennis match between Roger Federer (pink shirt) and Tomas Berdych (red shirt) at Rexall Centre! Unaware of the history b/w Federer & Berdych, I just automatically assumed that this was gonna be a 2-set cakewalk victory for Federer ... until the 2nd & 3rd sets came along, & Berdych was showing some fight!

For those who are unaware of the history between these two, Berdych has had Federer's number over the last two meetings, ousting Federer in the quarterfinals of this year's Wimbledon tournament & also in the round of 16 at this year's Sony Ericsson Open in Miami!

In the early going, it looked as if Federer might have had this game without any problems, winning the 1st set 6-3! However, he would lose the next set to Berdych 7-5! Federer even trailed Berdych by as much as 4-1 & 5-2 in the 3rd set, before fighting back to 5-5! After Berdych went up 6-5, Federer won the next game, forcing a 6-6 tiebreaker!

After going ahead 6-5 in the tiebreak, the video clip above shows how the rest of the match unfolded, with Berdych serving! Halfway into this vid, Berdych uses a challenge on the "OUT" call but loses, hence the delay before the post-match hand shakes! This match was done in about 2 hours and 40 minutes!

BTW, THIS WAS THE VERY FIRST PRO-TENNIS MATCH THAT I HAD EVER ATTENDED IN MY LIFE!! I gotta say, this was one helluva a match for my first ever! Anticipating a cakewalk for Federer, I was pleasantly surprised at the drama that had unfolded throughout this match ... so much so, that the following match between Novak Djokovic & Jérémy Chardy that lasted 1 hour and 10 minutes paled in comparison! This one match alone was worth the money IMO!

The guy who I turn to after Federer won the match was a diehard fan of his who just happened to be seated beside me! He was was extremely tense after almost seeing Federer lose in an upset ... but his man would prevail in the end, and avenge his two defeats at Berdych's hands! Many thanks to Darrell & his friend Sheila for their warmth & friendliness at my very first pro-tennis match!

I thought it played in Canada, but as I look so, so it played in Switzerland. You have quite an embarrassment when a fan unilateral Federer. Thumbs Down

@esquibelle It's not luck when you come back from 5-2 down and come within two points of losing 6-3 in the third set. If you say Fed got lucky, then Rafa got lucky vs Kohlscreiber.

Ive been to quite a few matches and have seen all the top 6 play but this is a match i certainly would of loved to of seen! Happy for you you got to see such a great match with an insane atmosphere! :) Fed showing the true champion he is again.
