Crash test video uses stuffed dogs, still shocking. Buckle your pets!

What about having a crate padded with dense foam inside and having the crate itself tethered with bungee cord to absorb the sudden stop?

Terrible with unrestrianed but almost as bad with the seat belt. Real dog would have had a broken neck and back! Seems like more engineering is needed in this dept. I use crates that are buckled in a seat belt but in the back of my van I'm trying to figure out to secure them so they don't fly out. True about getting killed in crate too! So hard to know! Defensive driving, not driving when tired or distracted. Everything you would do to keep your kids and yourself safe I guess.

I have a seatbelt for my dog, since she was a pup. Why buckle up yourself & kids and not your other family member?

No, I know no bashing is intended. I wasn't clear. My cats are usually in their carrier, which is on the floor, wedged between the back seat and the back of the front seat. So, unless the car is completely crushed, they are safe. Plus, they have blankets and soft towels in the carrier with them, so if they got tossed around inside the crate, it would be really difficult to hurt themselves.

Sorry, not trying to bash, but I ran out of room. Here's a video (copy and paste into a youtube URL) of what happens to a typical crate in a crash. Flying kitty. :(

Animals are often killed INSIDE their crates in crashes; what would happen to your cat hitting the windshield at 70mph? Same inside a hard plastic box than outside it. Crates have also been crushed, fly out the window onto the road, etc. There's one story on Ruff Rider's website of a crate that went off a bridge during an accident, killing the dog inside. The 4 dogs in harnesses were saved. Crates aren't always a guarantee of safety.

    Also, airbags can kill them.

My kitties are always in their hard plastic airline crates when they have to go in the car.

The safest way to transport your dog is in a crate, with the crate tied/lashed down. The next-best way is with a doggy seat belt. Also, don't leave your dog in front of an airbag - this video does not show that but they can serious injure or even kill a dog in front of them.
