With spring in the air, I decided to take advantage of a beautiful Sunday afternoon to see if luck would let me see M-NPVP come through town.
So after biking 7 miles on gravel and paved roads and reading a book for 2 hours under a tree, UP 7229 finally broke the spring Sunday sound with M-NPVP. He was flying through town! Short train that day, he only had about 60 cars in tow instead of 150.
After UP 7229 came through, dispatch said there was going to be a meet at Elk Creek, which is a couple miles north of town. I called up my grandma and politely asked her if she could take me to Elk Creek, and she did!! Even though she doesn't know her railfan "ediquite" I am glad she came along! (I liked to say thank you to her for doing that, she enjoyed it to and wants to do it again!!) We pulled up to Elk Creek with 7229 and her sisters sitting on the main. UP 5286 came into view over the hill pulling the Herzog ballest train. After she past, 7229 high-balls northbound again. The conducter of M-NPVP told us that the ballest train was meeting a "black dog" down at Carnes, but it was getting late.
