He reigned over the division during the one of its weakest eras. The best fighter he faced was Evander Holyfield, and that didn't take place until 1999 - long past Holyfield's prime
Stop me when I get to a legendary Lewis fight.
How Lewis held the title three times is not a Rocky story. He won the vacant WBC belt the first time in May 1993 with a lackluster decision over Tony Tucker.
In the last 90 years there has been 23 undisputed heavyweight champions. Lennox was 1. Give the guy a break. He beat pretty much everybody- not in the most challenging order- but that's called good management.
Ray Mercer - 1996 - Mercer was 35. So poor was his record, he hadn't won a? fight for 3 yrs, a controversial SD against Jesse Ferguson in 1993. He was also outclassed by a 43 yo Larry Holmes in 1991. Mercer dominated and was clearly robbed. Naturally Mercer wanted a rematch offering to donate his all his $10m purse to Charity (Project Pride-Newark). Amazingly the Vulture Lennox Lewis refused!
Oliver McCall - Oliver was 29 years old and stopped Lennox easily in the 2nd round. However in 1996 he fell into Crack Cocaine-Alcohol Problems. He had 3 drug related arrests and was under house arrest / drug rehab since December 15th 1996. Coward Lennox Lewis decided it was now "safe" to face Oliver McCall who would surely have knocked him out easily again if he was not in the throes of drug addiction
@Forest9924 Lewis had limited impact.
