Haiti Hit by Major 7.0 Earthquake
By Smith Georges
New York Haiti, the first black independent country in the world, has been dealt a major blow by mother nature. The worst earthquake since the 206 years of the countrys inception. An earthquake of a 7.0 magnitude shook the Caribbean nation around 5:00 pm. A total of 28 aftershocks have been recorded so far. Even though the Dominican Republic, which occupies the other side of the island didnt suffer any damage, it, nevertheless, felt the impact of the earthquake. The island of Hispaniola, which is shared by the two nations, has never experienced an earthquake of this enormity. There was a tsunami watch for the Caribbean region. Haiti, particularly the capital Port-au-Prince, looks like a scene from the movie 2012. The resilient Haitians shall overcome this challenge as they have always demonstrated throughout their existence since they were brought to the region as enslaved Africans.
I am very saddened about this earthquake and I have the medical supplies ready to go to bring
relief and Smith Georges and I will be traveling to Haiti to give immediate relief, said Safiyya Marcia Sarkin, the Executive Director and Founder of Women Beyond Survival, a 501C3 non-profit organization that does humanitarian work mostly in Africa. The organizations website is www.WomenbeyondSurvival.org.
