Johnny wrote this song in early to mid '58 while he was still with Sun Records. He never told Sam Phillips about it because he wanted to record it on the Columbia Records label that he was in talks with.
After signing with Columbia, Johnny recorded this song during his second session on Aug. 13, 1958. It was released as a single in November of 1958 and the rest is history.
DTYGTT started the whole "WESTERN" phase in country. Marty Robbins and etc. but It all started with JR Cash.
Another little tid-bit about this song. When Johnny was getting ready to record this, Don Law, the producer at Columbia Records said he'd prefer that Johnny didn't record this particular song because Cowboy ballads went out with the Singing Cowboy.
Johnny's big threat to Don Law was that if he didn't let him record Don't Take Your Guns To Town on the Columbia Label, he'd go and take it to Memphis and record it for SUN RECORDS. After Johnny made that threat, Don Law gave in and JR won.
