**Update**
As of December 23rd, 2009, Suigetsu has passed away. For what reason, I'm pretty sure it was old age, but I cannot be sure. I am just glad to have given him the life he deserved, rather than living his whole life in an irresponsible hell hole.

~~~
My new fishy! I've always loved bettas, so I was hoping to get a new one, and I did! ~ Isn't he beautiful?
I bought Suigetsu from PetLand, mostly out of impulse. I had originally told myself that if the condition of the fish were bad, then I would try somewhere else. I knew PetLand keeps many of their animals in bad conditions, but the situation appalled me.
There were probably only seven or eight bettas lined up on a huge glass shelf. The glass bowl sthey were in were nice and big, and well kept. But looking at the fish, I could see that quite a few were laying on their sides on the bottom of the bowl, completely uncaring of and desensitized to their neighbors. There were no opaque slides between the bowls to keep them active. I saw a cute little red and blue crown-tail, that had a white fungus growing out of it's head. An equally beautiful black cambodian was above him, I was considering him until I saw that he was sickly, with curling fins and a glaze over his eyes.
But I was sucked in by this beautiful royal blue cambodian veil-tail, isolated on the top shelf. I lifted him down to get a closer look. The mottling on his body and the slight bit of magenta that stripes through his fins was beautiful. He passed all my tests; his fins were in great condition, he no cut or scrapes, nothing else amiss, and he even flared when I held his bowl up to another betta (though this other fish didn't respond).
He's settled in well, you can see that he's eating, and he's even built a bubble nest already (though I don't plan on breeding him). I think he's very happy with his surroundings, too. The plant gives him privacy and he enjoys laying up against the glass eggs. He's very active, too!
  • Hey can you help? My crown tail betta fish is always freaking out if I get close to the tank and he starts swimming really fast. It is obvious that he is nervous around humans. How come other vids the bettas don't freak out when a human is near? Any help?
  • This is quite normal for a male betta. They are commonly aggressive towards other fish with long fins, or anything that may resemble one. It's actually desired and healthy for male bettas to flare and display fighting behaviour.
    Suigetsu was a very docile fish because he was kept in close quarters with others of his kind, and thus he did not demonstrate the flaring reaction often. Some fish also get desensitized if they are kept in an area (say, a kitchen) where activity is often happening.
  • I think if i watched my pretty betta in that tank, i\d get depressed. Go get him a 4 gallon tank, you can get one that comes with a kit, filter and light for like 20 bucks
  • Good vid make sure ur tank is big enough:) and kazgamer, it means your Betta thinks it's food time many fish do this my guppies do it when I turn the feeding light on:D
  • @kazgamer Acctually, that means that he likes you, and he knows that its you... Bettas acctually know who their owner is... My BFF's betta, Waves, knows its her whenever she comes near his tank... So he starts swimming fast, and swimming against the glass... So no worries!
