English composer Gustav Holst composed The Planets between 1914 and 1916. The Birmingham premiere of the suite took place in 1918, fifteen years before Pluto was discovered. Though the Planets became by far the most popular work of Holst's and one of the most known pieces by an English-born composer, Holst did not consider the piece one of his finest. Partially because of this, he never wrote an eighth movement, though unexpectedly the IAU relegated Pluto from its status as planet proper in 2006.

  • The meek shall inherit the earth and the band nerds will inherit the planets. WOOT

  • Ah, how refreshing. I love classical, electronic, jazz, trip hop, hip hop, rap, techno, house, classic rock, progressive rock, bossa nova, and some metal. But there is a time for each, and you need to vary your selection. The Planets is definitely a nice change of pace from the regular stuff I listen to.

Classical, house, jazz, and electronic will always have a special place in my heart though. I've always thought that the Howl's Moving Castle soundtrack was particularly amazing.

  • @xXRubella666Xx Interesting. For me I love music from most genres, but nothing compares to classical music. It generally has far more depth and subtly than popular music & ultimately elicits a much greater emotional response in me. It does however, require an investment in time. Classical music pieces sometimes need to be listened to 5-10 times before one "gets" the piece. A big difference is that pop music is 'hearing' while classical music is 'listening'. Classical is not background amusement.

  • 0:35-0:55: Sounds just like the beginning of Galaga Game Over theme!! :D

  • @flutemusic55 I'm 19 and not a fan of classical music. It all sounds the same to me, and this is from someone who generally likes something from every genre. One thing I do find, though, is that I enjoy classical music far more when it's played on electronic instruments. I heard a Bach fugue done on keyboard synths and I loved it. Daft Punk have done the same thing and I love that. I really think this is the way to get youth into it.

  • For the lulz brought me here :D

  • @Feldenstar Hacking is Science. Bronies aren't degrading. They're not things like Jersey Shore or Fox News.

  • @FredIsMyName22 Possibly... If you consider bronies nerds... then yes. I have a friend who is a nerd, he also is a hacker.

  • @Feldenstar Things which are degrading to society?

  • @FredIsMyName22 I could not disagree more with your definition of nerd. One can be a nerd and be interested in other things.

  • For Lisa Globetopper and Galaxy Girl...

  • well... It is so sad, that young people do not enjoy classical musical as much. I find it to be a beautiful genre. YOUNG PEOPLE : LISTEN, ENJOY, AND LEARN FROM THE CLASSICS. You will have a better cultural background. And, classical music is the basis of music. I love it. (: And I'm not afraid to hide it.
