Awww... Why did you shave it? D:

ohhhh poor baby!! :(

Never, ever comfort a dog when it is frightened like that. It might make you feel better but it tells the dog something is terribly wrong, and you agree and praise it for being so scared. Instead, treat the dog normally, act normally, see if you can get her to play. Show her it is nothing to fear, don't encourage her panic or it will become unfixable.

my 16 year old keeshond doesnt look nearly as old as yours! doesnt look like he aged well :/

Awwwwwww. I just wanted to smother our Keeshond when it shivered. They look like little lambs with all their hair shaved.

@mywingsareyours I agree. It's just fine to shave an OLDER Keesh. I had a Keesh who couldn't handle the heat in her last years. All she'd do is lay in the shade by her water. When we shaved her, after she recovered from what looked like a day or two of embarrassment, it was as if she were a puppy again. She loved running and playing outside. We just monitored her sun exposure to avoid sunburns on her skin. Who knew losing 3 lbs of fur could be so good! Oh, and her coat grew back just fine.

Babying or trying to reassure a dog who is scared of storms is the best way to encourage their behavior. It's best to go about your normal business and not acknowledge it because you're the dominant dog to them. If you're comforting them, a subordinate dog, then you're acting submissive to them, and they will just get worse.

@Overbear You're dumb. Even the slightest research shows it's PERFECTLY okay to do so, however the recommended method is leaving it be.. But ONLY for younger dogs. For older dogs (i.e. this one, who is 12) it would be recommended. Why? Older dogs have trouble with heat exchange. And it will NEVER cause the hair to grow back incorrectly. It only dirties the undercoat. I know this is old, but your comment was so cocky and wrong I had to comment.

wow I never seen a keeshond with their fur cut. My dogs would freeze but she still looks adorable.

@XOcowgirlOX Sorry to hear about ur Dog passing. The dog looked great with a buzz cut. I have a very healthy and happy keeshond. We buzz him just as one shaves a sheep. he is very happy in the summer this way. I've never seen such a band of ignorant assholes with there stupid remarks about shaving the dog. These people need top get a life. U did absolutly nothing wrong and U are way too nice not telling them all to go fuck themselves!
they have the right to cut the dogs fur if they want. show is NOT the only way. they dont get upset if there coat is shaved, they dont care!! the dog was afraid of the thunder.

I'm sorry, this simply isn't true. While they do need a little fur to protect their skin from the sun, it is perfectly safe buzz them in hot weather. Even well-groomed keesie coats are NOT light and airy, they trap body heat. We've buzzed our boy for years in the summer and he is MUCH more comfortable - he spends more time playing and less time panting. It grows back by fall, and if anything it makes ticks easier to find and remove (he's never had fleas). Grooming will prevent tangles.
