Can you tell I'm a big Derico Watson fan at all? ;)
This solo is basically me wishing I was him. In my head, I'm on stage with Victor Wooten, the spotlight is on, and my chops are 100 times better than they actually are. :D
Buuuut....the truth of the matter is that I don't have hands like Derico, and I'm really on stage with my group, The Frazer Wambeke Trio (go to http://www.youtube.com/TheFWTrio for more vids, or check out http://www.thefw3.com for more info). Myself, the bass player (Juan), and the pianist-slash-guitarist-slash-vocalist (Frazer) have been playing together for years, and it's gotten to the point where we can almost read each other's musical thoughts, which is a lot of fun! :D
Anyhow, the disclaimer: I mess some stuff up here - I'm my own worst critic, for sure - but I also enjoy messing with time and playing with space in the first half of the solo. Every new gig, and subsequent video, is a learning experience for me. Hope you can glean something from it, too, my friends.
Enjoy! :)
Please tell me you get paid alot for those skills...

@FilthyFloor I make some decent money drumming, but I'm certainly not paying my rent with drumming alone unfortunately. ;)

Super Taste. I'm going to show the first couple of minutes of this to students to illustrate how to effectively use spacing to funkify grooves. Thanks man.

That's awesome! Thank *you* for the comment. I'm flattered that you think this is good enough to share with your students. Makes my day! :D

such a great example of controlled chaos! not all great solos have to be crazy, great inspiration for young drummers like me :) thanks for posting and keeping true music alive!
