Attorney Leo J. Terrell — whose client Juan Valera won a $420,000 judgment against Costco on allegations that he was retaliated against for complaining that he was mistreated at the company's Inglewood warehouse because he is gay and HIV-positive — held a news conference on Feb. 17, 2009, prior to the start of the West Hollywood City Council meeting. Terrell described alleged discriminatory and harassing employment practices against the company's homosexual employees and announced the filing of a second lawsuit on Valera's behalf, demanding his reinstatement to a managerial position. The attorney also asked gay rights supporters to endorse a national boycott of Costco stores.
