Buhay Patay" (Dokumentaryo ni Jay Taruc)

Many of us consider death a sad or frightening reality which we would rather put off if we could. It is not among our favorite topics of conversation. But for the Maravilla family, death is a means to live.

Leo Maravilla works as a mortician and embalmer in a funeral home. His wife and kids serve as his assistants. Daughter Len-Len is only thirteen, but she is not squeamish about blood or touching cadavers. One day, she wants to follow in her fathers footsteps and become an embalmer herself. She doesnt mind jeers from other children because she is proud of her familys work.

But what is it really like to live in a home where, instead of frames and figurines, bottles of formalin and cadavers are the regular fixtures? Where your playground alters from the morgue to the funeral chapel?

Despite the depressing reality they face each day, the family is cheerful and closely bonded. Could it be true that encounters with death make people more aware of living right?
