Oh yea, saw him live in 1985 in a small club and sat a few yards from him - he absolutely blew me away. I see a lot of posts about shredders - I don't see any comparison. Shredders use the power of the amp only with a little fast finger motion. Real players like Johnny use both the power of the amp combined with their passion as evidenced by their tone - there is no comparison between such tone and the noise that feedback speed freaks make.

Omar plays the Austin scene quit a bit. I saw him twice at Antones. He was fantastic, a great performer. It kills me how you can go into small clubs and see such great talent and then turn on the TV and see no brain bimbos like Brit. Spears making millions.

I love lots of guitar playing and music styles. But Johnny Winter was just always a readily available, talented musician. I've read many interviews with many guitarists, and just about all of them give an honorable mention to Johnny.Though I've not met him, he seems like a good old common neighbor-just always there for us. Thanks for this great post!

I broke my "replay" button... Johnny is a true king of the blues. The pure raw energy. Similar in feel to Rory Gallagher, could only imagine if the two had have played together.

Awesome!!!
I saw the 'Johnny Winter Blues Band' play back on the
7th Oct '91 (The Return of The Illustrated Man Tour) at the Town&Country2 club, Highbury Corner, Islington, London (Now known as the Garage) and with Special Guests
'Omar and The Howlers'. Both bands blew my socks off. What a night!
Johnny, Your the man!!!
Yeah - happy 65th to Johnny today 2-23-09! His ''91 CD Let Me In smoked! And '92's Hey, Where's your brother? was his last powerful studio CD. On ''04's I'm a bluesman he's just a shadow of his old self. But glad he's still alive and playing!
