After September 11, 2001, militarism and real estate boomed in Hawaii. Military expansion brought real estate speculation, and for the first time in Hawaii, a market for wealthy people looking to buy a second home. The combined increase in militarism and private land ownership have set housing prices beyond the reach of average workers who simply cannot afford rents that have doubled in just a few short years. I was particularly struck, as someone who has been to Hawaii, with how Ms. Kelly managed to give space to a much broader and more interconnected understanding of what produces homelessness, especially in a place coveted for its physical beauty and its military placement. I was shocked and saddened to learn that the people who truly call Hawaii home have been kicked to the sidelines and to hear that tourists (I believe Hawaii is dependent on tourism for much of its income) shrug or blame the victim when they hear of the enormity of the problem (3000 people in a population of about 750,000 is significant--and that's only on one side of the island). I was very glad to have turned on the radio when I did. Thanks to FSRN for using the airwaves to make us more conscious of what reality is like in "paradise," and thanks to Anne Kelly for a brilliantly woven piece of journalism. I hope it will jerk the many people who love Hawaii out of any complacency concerning the fallout from tourism and the huge presence of the military there. FREE SPEECH RADIO NEWS

  • But the great US of A donate 3 billion to Iseal and American and Hawaiians are homeless and starving everyday!!!!

  • Dog The Bounty Hunter and his family of rich white people will hunt down every freeloading Hawaiian bum and give them a place to live in a California prison. And they also collect the bones of your ancestors and give them to the family pit bulls who have a better quality of life than native Hawaiians HAHAHAHAHAHA !

  • u like know how thats possible for us people too be living like that i tell you y its because of all the people from other countries coming to our island and living makes it hard for us too live our lifes thats real.

  • I don't understand, ho could there be homeless in Hawaii? It seems to be one of the more well to do states. How are these people not taken care of?

  • They need to call Wayne Dyer for help.

  • Very informative.

  • Paradise? Or Plagued? Hawaii is one of the most beautiful island chains in the South Pacific. But there are things going on over there that most people don't know about. Ice has plagued the islands and even people who live in homes across from the beaches are no help either. They are the ones complaining to have these people removed.

    Thanks for posting this!

  • The solution to homelessness is not money or jobs or anything like that, the solution is legally owning land in allodial title, with no property taxes due. this has a systemic effect on the economy, hours worked just to get by goes from 40hrs to 10hrs or even less, if you provide for your own food on your own land then you will likely still need to work 20 hours a week but only 10 hours will be outside the garden/farm see george gordon org and if you work more be charitable

  • If you think that the Super Ferry Sucks, some of these people wouldn't be homeless if there was the ferry which would have provided jobs.

  • Instead of making a railroad even if it is important, why don't they make a giant stadium hotel thingy as a home for the poor native Hawaiians.
