I think this video totally missed the point which the critics of piracy make, which is;

The point isnt that the big bands want more money, in a way they are thinking about the smaller bands and what is good for them, but the main point is about artist rights. Its their creation and to just have it passed along is insulting to their art.

Its their right as artists to have the final say if they want their music to be availabel for downlaod or not. No one has the right to do so for them.

That's a very valid point. Unfortunately there was nobody in the video to bring up this point. We took on the aspect of big business and pirates, rather than the individual artists rights. That would be a whole other documentary. Thanks for the comment though.

I consider downloading a completely legitimate part the buying process. Why? Because if I go to a furniture store, I am not going to pay for a couch without making sure that I like it. It's the same thing when I download music; if I like the product I will go out and pay for it. The music industry expects you to pay money for music you haven't heard, placing your faith in the name of the artist or company; would you buy a couch on faith because the last one from that company was good?

But you go to movies without seeing the whole thing and Itunes and Best Buy allow you to listen to samples of music before purchasing. I definitely know what you mean though and when it comes to music most of the artist only get money from concerts and merchandising.

About the movies: true, but that is a different art medium (nevertheless, I don't watch many movies anymore, because I find most of them are just clones of previous movies and I don't want to waste my money/they don't deserve it). Furthermore, Best Buy and iTunes don't tend to support independent artists quite as much as they do commercial artists, and most of the stuff I like is independent music.
