Sustained Spinning is an infinite rotation. It requires complete concentration, proper footing and balance. From my practice I have learned that (beside foot placement) one of the most important concepts to master is the balance between positive and negative space. Compare it to Wheel Throwing with pottery. To create anything you must first center your clay (foot placement). After centering you must then pull the clay up, placing your hand inside and outside of the material. You must keep equal pressure from inside and out. Now to translate that into sustained spinning: Your body is the clay and your hoop is your hands. As you center your body, your hoop can help guide you up and down creating a barrier to the negative space around you. You want to exert yourself outwards, but also be able to contain yourself so you don't spin out of control.

  • Hi! Thanks so much for this video and the explanation! I discovered your videos a while ago and I really like your style, very dreamy. I didn't know it was called "Sustained spinning" and I tried doing it, but when I do, I look like...a duck with a leg problem, or a wounded animal, it's quite bad. But most of all, I feel extremely dizzy! Plus I cannot get the hoop to go slowly enough, even though I use a 39" hoop...Any advice on how to get rid of the dizziness? (other than practice...) thanks!

  • Fantastic and as always, inspiring! Thanks for the description of the visualizations--this is wonderful! I was wondering if you could give a little more advice for this practice. You mention footwork--how would you describe what you are doing with your feet? And how do you keep from getting dizzy? I feel with practice I am getting less stumbling dizzy, but wondered if there are specific techniques you use. Many thanks for sharing these videos!

  • @ShpongledHoops thanks! :-D

  • You make these exercises look so simple! The explanation was incredibly helpful and seeing you do an entire video of variations on the one technique really helped me visualize how to center & work with the negative space. I'll have to keep the pottery example in mind next time I do sustained spinning!

Also... random note... but maybe you could just post your musical selection with each video? I was wondering what song this was, and I know you get that question an awful lot on your videos. ^_^

  • Thanks for the awesome explanation, now maybe I won't fall over next time I do some sustained spinning :)

  • mesmerizing as always.... ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!

  • awesome! you have totally inspired me to do way more with sustained spinning. i love the ceramics analogy. another thing about it that i've found is that you have to really remove your focus from the things directly around you - that will make you so dizzy, obviously. i try to keep my eyes slightly upward with a really soft focus

  • Wonderful...........
