Washington DC - On June 24, 2009, Congressman Jim Oberstar made his opening remarks on the Surface Transportation Assistance Act of 2009, which is being considered by the House Subcommittee on Highways and Transit today. Oberstar told the subcommittee that he is committed to pass legislation that will bring the nations roads and bridges up to date, despite a move by the White House to delay the legislation for 18 months. Oberstar says the delay will mean that state departments of transportation will not be able to plan major highway projects because they will not be sure how much revenue will be available. That delay could set back projects as much as four years and cost hundreds of thousands of new construction jobs. The legislation has wide bipartisan support and is expected to come to the House Floor before mid-September
Why not fund the rails. So the rails would have automatic track switching and the freight can move cheaper and more fuel efficient on rails. Besides 40,000 Americans get killed on the road in auto accidents and some of those deaths could be prevented by putting more freight on rails.
