The lateral squat is what we call a static supported single leg exercise. Static denotes no foot motion, supported means both feet are in contact with the ground, a bench or a box. The lateral squat is used to develop frontal plane hip mobility and is a great beginner warm-up exercise. The lateral squat does not lend itself to loading.
