On this episode of Wax On we are breaking a hobby box of 2008 Topps Moments and Milestones Baseball.
This is one monster of a set. The basic premise is to create a card for every step in a players specific milestone. Take Barry Bonds' 762 career home run record for example. In this set there are 762 different cards for that milestone and that is just in the base set. The number of cards here is simply astounding.
There are 113 different veterans many with multiple milestones and 25 rookies with three milestones each in the base set. Each of the base set cards is sequentially numbered to 199. To figure out how many cards are in the set you would need to know what each player's milestone is and add all of them together. If somebody ever hand collated the entire set I would give them 50 dollars just to see it.
In addition to the base set there are three sequentially numbered parallel versions of each and every moment and milestone. Black numbered to 32, Blue numbered to 10 and Red all 1 of 1.
There are several autographs in this product. 40 veterans and 20 rookies autographed cards. The number of cards each veteran autographed is unclear. However, the 20 rookies signed all of their base and parallel cards
Topps also released the printing plates for each of the cards. All of the rookie plates are autographed. Their website shows a picture of a Prince Fielder autographed plate but there is no mention of veteran autographs on printing plates and I have not found evidence that they exist.
In my box I received a stack of assorted base set cards, several black parallels, and six blue parallels. I also got two rookie autographs. One of J.R. Towles, the other of Wladimir Ballentien.
One odd thing I noticed is the over abundance of the Vernon Wells doubles milestone in my box. I think there were 17 of them in all. This is truly a very strange and bloated product.
are the towles or the ballentien for trade?

No but thanks for asking. I like to hang on to my rookie cards, especially ones that are autographed.
