  • Crazy, but they just released the real COLOR photos of market st in 1906 and they are amazzzzzing to look at, you've never seen color pics look so good.

  • @tikibarman5 The old lenses on those cameras caused the image to hit the film upside down. When the film was processed and used for projection it was probably flipped vertically and led to the image being reversed and making it seem that the buildings are on the wrong side of the street. In a sense you are looking at the "Back" of the film. The person transferring the film could have also wrongly loaded the film backwards so it would seem reversed North/South in this case.

  • i liked this thank you

my teacher told me to look for this after he showed me the same road 4 days before the quake.

  • beware history repeats

  • so old...

  • Leaky Mustang -- You're right: The movie is taken as tram car is going East on Market towards the Ferry Building, which shows up at the end of the movie. Still, the movie is turned around: the Flood Building, visible around 2.15, would be on the North, or left, side of Market. The Emporium, seen at 2.25; the Call Building, seen at 3.32, the Hearst (Examiner) Building, seen at 3.57, and the Palace Hotel, seen at 3.51, would all be on the South, or Right side, of Market.

    Wonder what happened?

  • Isn't the camera heading east on Market? We end up at the Embarcadero.

  • In looking at this more closely, it is clear that the print is Backwards! At approximately 3:57 you see both the Call building and the Examiner building. Both are on the left side of the street. But, they are backwards: if the camera is going West on Market, those buildings will in fact be on the left, but the Examiner building will be the closer building and the Call the farther building.

  • It was April 18, 1906. This film is of Market Street heading West from the Ferry Building. The tall "domed" building that is visible in the distance is the Call building (newspaper). It is still standing, although has been heavily re-facaded

  • It was 1906 not 1908.
