Ranged Units main advantage is that they can damage the enemy before engaging in hand-to-hand combat.
And you also want ranged units at their max range - to decrease the amount of units that can 'see' them.

@baz32lego Just go into scenario editor and make 2 groups of armies. Then pause the game. Click on each or a group of men and attack who ou want. Then chage teams and click the others to fight also. Then unpause.
