  • it's about learning jazz step by step in a true and hardworking way, so you understand everything you play, instead of approxiamating the whole problem and overplay something you don't know what is. You must know your music changes, know the things that have been played before, and know what you have to do.. with a spark of adventure.

  • you can drill them and teach them how to handle things, but that is a kind of subtle forcing of will upon them so they can see something for themselves, but you are still an active influence on that, no matter how subtle, and so it will never be the real initial insight of their own into something that truly sparked their interest. you cannot have interest unless you realize or understand something in some way. appreciation of any kind. that is the primary factor in skill of any kind.

  • that is basically the essence of being a parent. always be on the lookout for what interests them, and let them go as far as they want, as fast as they want. of course, you could say it might be best or wise to tell them that they might want to take it slow, to really see and feel for themselves how interaction with the creative process affects them, and how they affect their own mood or the outcome of their interaction, whether it's conscious or not. they have to find out for themselves.
