good discussion, i have to agree with both, Chitra has a slightly better and soothing voice and by 90's, S janaki (may be due to age) became a shadow of what she was in early 80's. But When she was young, she used to sing all those high pitched and otherwise difficult songs with much ease compared to todays singer. But still if asked to make a choice, i may go for chitra by a whisker

As I said in my last comment, Chitra is a great singer, but Janaki is something special. When in her younger years used to sing without any facial expression and movement of hands/legs/body. Compare the ease in singing Janaki's song by others (Radhika Tilak, Gayathri, Cibella). Perhaps age and health (overweight) might have been a problem for Chithra. I liked Gopan's singing better than Jayachandran's in "Yadukula." Thanks for the discussion which ends here.
