The core of Sunny Day Real Estate formed in 1992, originally under the name Empty Set. Empty Set consisted of Dan Hoerner (guitar, vocals), Nate Mendel (bass), and William Goldsmith (drums). They released a 7-inch, Flatland Spider, before a tumultuous period of musical chairs and name changes. In that timeframe, Mendel took a break to tour with another band, Hoerner took over the bass, and the group was joined by Jeremy Enigk, a high school friend of Goldsmith. Before long, Enigk ascended as the permanent frontman of the band. Where Hoerner's vocal style had been in the rougher, hardcore vein, Enigk's higher-pitched, somewhat strained vocal style added greater emotional depth to the band's songs.

  • SDRE was one of the best bands ever. I wish they were still going. I would love to see them live.

  • @Irishpunked

Rites of Spring, Jawbreaker, later Minor Threat. The DC hardcore scene in the 80's kinda got a bit emotional, and was thusly dubbed emotional hardcore.

  • @TheExploitedable : SDRE were so unique and despite their music having reflective and depressive undertones, I have never really considered them to be Emo per se. I do agree that a bit of their music also has dark undertones that are very goth like. SDRE is just a phenomenal band that blessed us with outstanding music in both quality and substance.

  • @Kirschthollar How the hell did you do that?

  • @Irishpunked I say they are miore Goth than Emo though who the Hell cares both bands were great.

  • I always forget how kick ass Seven is and I have all of their albums thank God.

  • @NathanAndJohnny -.- I hope your first born child is raped.

  • @calvinandhodge Yeah. I know that SDRE was called the second Nirvana, they should of been called 2nd wave grunge, or something of the sort.

  • @Irishpunked No. The Cure are considered more of a New Wave band than anything. Emo doesn't literally mean "emotional." If that were the case, Joni Mitchell and Fleetwood Mac would be emo, too.

  • @dashofchutmeg The Cure also right?

  • @calvinandhodge Actually, this is third-wave emo, which is very different from the "original" emo. Check out Rites of Spring if you want to hear "real" emo.
