I know the point of this story is a selfish act (doing something she because she believed she was kind) is ultimately not a kind act.
Interesting that I just watched the Dalai Lama say "If we are more compassionate person, I [we] get more benefit"
It would seem like the Dalai Lama could take a lesson from this young lady. Who a difficult concept very well in English.
