I'm feeling a little lazy, so I will copy a wikipedia excerpt that nicely sums this game up:

"Columns, a popular and much-imitated falling colored blocks puzzle, had been the pack-in game with Game Gear at one time. Super Columns enhanced the gameplay by adding new types of blocks, as well as the ability to turn the lines of blocks a la Dr. Mario. Aside from endless and flash mode, Super Columns also included a story mode, wherein you play against an evil merchant (and his cronies) who wants to harness a jewel to make the people bow to him.

Endless mode is classic gameplay of Columns. Stack up to 3 of the same jewel diagonally, vertically or horizontally to clear them. The game ends when the jewels reach the top of the grid.

In Story mode, you must defeat each opponent 3 times in order to advance in the game.

Flash mode is the same as Endless, except you enter the next stage by clearing the jewels that are flashing."

Enjoy the video...oh and I should point something out. The excerpt above only pertains to the Game Gear version of Columns. The original Columns was also released on other platforms besides the GG.

  • To this day, I have never been able to defeat that first guy......

  • I remember playing this Columns game once at an old game store (which turned into Target after a long while ago). Since then, Columns had a Sega Ages collection and two anime licenses attached (Sakura Taisen and Osamu Tezuka characters) before returning with Columns Crown for the GBA.
