Good taxpayer money for bad engineering design, sigh...

The interesting thing about all this is, after he showed people how to cheat the system.. The fare inspectors had a spike in the amount of fare citations issued that week.. Conclusion: You can try to cheat the system some of the time, but, you will get caught and issued a $75.00 citation... "So don't do it!!!!"

Who are the idiots that selected this system? They are idiots and obviously didn't perform enough due diligence when researching existing systems.

You can also ride muni for free with a clipper card that has no money in its account by simply showing the card to an operator like a fast pass or by pretending your having a problem with the reader. I see this happen almost everyday.

Hey Stanley I saw today a "KRON 4 News" Truck on I-10..... in Tucson Arizona. It looks to be a new Ford News Van. Is that truck heading your way to California?

what would happen if, say, someone were to wave his/her hand in front of the sensor, get stopped, and then just show a fastpass?
It's part of the gate design, Stanley. On purpose.
.
The similar gates in other transit systems have always been there just to keep the honest people honest. By intentional design, for safety and handicapped-access reasons, it's always been easy to bypass transit-system gates. They're not actually supposed to be what keeps people from cheating. That's what the police do, when they periodically check the cards of riders and ticket those whose cards indicate they didn't pay to ride.

@TVman1981 you mean putting duct tape over the sensors? because that's what they do with every other problem... some "quick fix" in a vain attempt at solving a bigger problem.
