A new one. Insomnia brings you "Lords of the Streets," a song about the burning desire of youth to break out of the cage your family, your school and your town have built for you and making a cage of your own in which to waste away.
The inspiration for this song came when I heard Coldplay's "Paradise" on the radio. That song's big, anthemic "oh-oh-oh" ducked my expectations, leaving a musical tension that sat uneasily on my mind. I have never considered myself very good at writing anthems, but I make an attempt to do so now and again. This song makes me think of Springsteen, a phenomenal anthem writer, and his song "Born to Run," which is probably the best rock anthem ever written. That said, it definitely pales in comparison to "Born to Run," and probably to "Paradise" as well. Rock anthems are about hope, and at the heart of hope is a profound and pregnant emptiness; my anthems fail (when they do) because they fall in love with the emptiness and are never born out of it.
This song was supposed to have harmonica, but I can't find my F Hohner. Ah, well. This isn't "The Ghost of Tom Joad."
--------------------------------------
When they asked, he would say she was his daughter
When they asked he would say she was dead
He would turn with a tear black as tar
And a smile like a wire cut molar-deep
And they always believed

When the empress arrived, it was snowing
They were parked on their heels at the door
And the light lingered green under cheekbones
Hollow, in a downcast December breath
Coiling snakes at her feet

Oh...

On the last of the bones of the city
On the heat of a conquering fire
Through the tangle of ash and the dreams
Of the lords of the streets left desolate
Come away
Come away

There's a new kind of lonely that's waiting
There's a star falling bright just for us
When they ask, we can say you're the ghost of the fall
And the daughter of disease
And they'll always believe

Oh...
