The thing is, their THOUGHTS are directly audible to the people around them, but they have no clue, because people are obligated by law to pretend (in front of them) that this is not actually happening!
Otherwise, they'd have some serious mental breakdown, become suicidal, etc.
Since they're geniuses, they're protected against it happening.
