In May the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency held a public hearing in Charleston W.Va., which focused on the future of surface mining in Appalachia.

Coal supporters turned out in force to tell EPA how important coal mining is to the economic well-being of Appalachia and emphasize the need to ensure coal remains an important part of the region's future.
