A theremin performance of ''Lascia Ch'io Pianga'' (also known as ''Let Me Weep'') from the opera ''Rinaldo'' by Handel.

I first played this piece about 12 months ago on my E-Pro theremin, and it has been part of my regular repertoire ever since. I've been wanting to return to it and record an updated improved version, and chose my Wavefront Classic theremin this time.

This is a lovely classical opera piece that seems ideally suited to the theremin; I'm surprised that more precision thereminists don't play it!

  • How I would love for my Moog Etherwave to sound like this. I guess, I'll have to order a Wavefront huh? Does your Wavefront have a Pitch preview?

  • @EtherealTristesse I started with a Moog Etherwave, and found it an excellent theremin to learn on. An Wavefront Classic would be a major investment for you, and, as excellent as they are, perhaps not something you should rush into until you feel ready. Any technique you learn on the Moog will still work on the Wavefront as and when you're ready. Mine does have a pitch-preview facility, although I rarely use it. I find its voice well-suited to pitch-fishing.

  • Wonderful playing - I so love love the voice of the Wavefront! You are fortunate!!! :)

  • @EtherealTristesse Thank you for your kind comment. My apologies for the late reply; I am rather busy. The Wavefront Classic does have a wonderful sound, quite different to my other theremins - and sounds even better ''in person''. It is always a pleasure to play.

  • This song could be performed well in a cemetery chapel as funeral music. Imagine a thereminist instead of the ubiquitous organ - that's so goth...

The singing music desk has a nicely sweet tone; the timbre is very hermaphroditic - a cross between violin, voice and slide trombone without coming any of them too close. I am astonished to read that this is really no tube theremin (although Wavefront Classic is at least one of the most expensive transistor models).

  • Thank you for you comment. Yes, the wavefront has a voice quite different to my other theremins; your description of it as being a fusion of voice, violin and trombone seems pretty accurate. I can adjust it to sound more stringlike or trombonelike, but prefer where it sounds somewhere between the two, yet not quite like either one.

  • Wonderful!

  • This is very beautiful. I really want a theremin, but perhaps will have to win the lottery first.

I made music on a transistor radio when I was a kid......some 50 years ago........

    Fascinates me, totally.

  • @Thereminstrel : Thank you so much for the comment. as a former cellist - I fell in love with the Wavefront's singing voice!!! Very cello like, which pleases my ear! I would like to add the Wavefront Theremin to the Ambient/Neu Classical music I am into and making...

THank you for being such a nice gentleman and answering to your comments. I appreciate it. :)

  • Aaaw ;-) This is a lovely piece!

  • You make me cry with the theremin. I love this instrument!
