Episode 6 of In Search of Giants: Dr Brian Cox takes us on a journey through the history of particle physics. In this episode we learn how forces are the instruments of change in the universe.

This film is part of a series originally broadcast on Teachers' TV (http://www.teachers.tv/video/23645).

The series was made with the support of The Science and Technology Facilities Council (www.scitech.ac.uk).

  • These movies are very informative and educational. I have enjoyed watching them for entertainment and educational purposes with a desire to understand what is happening at the LHC. They have proved quite fruitful as they were intended to excite and inspire thoughts over the subject or even serve as references to a degree. I particularly like the videos # 2,3,4,7,12, and 13. #13 gives a good explaination of what the Higgs field theory is and how it makes matter obtain a mass. Excellent show!

  • The maths in quantu physics would blow most people's mind lol. I remember doing this at university and very few of us could actually do the maths that was required. More people claim to understand quantum mechanics than actually do. I could do it and understand parts of it but at degree level you only really scratch the surface. You really need to do a Phd to get a good understanding.

  • @Thaer35 fo sure

  • @hovsec what planet do you live on?

  • @sinwow33 At degree level it's not *that* hard. It just requires you to spend enough time on it. I always find that the mathematical formalisms make things look really hard at first, when in reality what's going on aint so bad. That said, I try not to think too much about 'why' it happens the way it does would really serve to confuse me. Maybe when I get a bit better at it I'll have a go.

  • isnt that machine the same as the particle collider?
