To pick the next winner of an hour of free training, I wrote a program in VBA to determine a winner by random draw.

I have created a form you can download to pick a random record from any table or query. Download and get instructions here:

http://www.AccessMVP.com/strive4peace/RandomPicker

VBA stands for Visual Basic for Applications and is the coding language for Access.

I quickly cover how the code was done, for the benefit of those who already program. This is NOT where I intend to start teaching you VBA ... so, if you are are new to coding, please don't get frustrated! ... think of it as dipping your toes into an ocean ... enjoy the cool feel of the water...whether you can swim or not!

When I do teach you VBA, it will be introduced with simple concepts and build as we go along -- and I will keep it interesting for those of you on a higher level (smile) -- you will learn and you will get better.

Congratulations to our new winner! Send me email to set up your free training.

The next 'drawing' will be made from the first 50 to make nice comments ... actually from 2 to 51 since the first to comment already won :) ... and I'll get the range for the random number right this time (thanks, John)

* have an awesome day :)

  • Hi Lyn (is that your name?)

As folks subscribe to me, I put the usernames into a database. Each subscriber is identified with a numeric key and a number with the order they subscribed. I also use this database to construct the TO to notify subscribers when I post new videos -- thought this was automatic but, apparently, it is not (unless there is a default somewhere that I can't find).

thank you for sharing your make-up videos :)

    Warm Regards,

  • oh wow i've never seen this...when u do the random draw does it automatically add the names like sinc them or do you have to enter each name yourself for it to draw the names??

  • you're welcome! and thank you for the kind words! I am hoping to catch up a bit this week on work and other things -- then make another video next week :)

  • Thank you crystal very much for these wonderful videos. I hope you will have time to continue with them, and I look forward to learn VBA from you.
