and it keeps the smoke out ya face

well technically, by putting a tall piece of pipe into the smoke stack, therotically, it helps to draw the draft of the fire hotter there for producing steam a little faster. as well as giving the locomotive a much louder exhaust beat. half the time guys make smaller blast nozzle's to help make the engine sound better thru the exhuast steam.
