Don't read the dictionary. Read Ulysses.

I really think you need Stuart Gilbert's book on Ulysses to truly understand the text, especially as the years go by and the allusions become stale. Joyce confided a wealth of clues to Gilbert regarding a number of themes and parallels in his masterpiece. Just like Stephen says in the book, "History is a nightmare from which I am trying to awake."

there isn't an experience in this life... quite like reading Ulysses for the first time. the complexities of this man's mind are boggling to the imagination.

Best book to get the most learning and laughs out of Ulysses is Richard Ellmann's little study, "Ulysses on the Liffey"---shows you all the main threads and structures and when those open up you're really getting so much more from the details (Gilbert bores me).....Long live James Joyce!
