Tribe Hamsa members Kara & Naja perform an improvised duet of American Tribal Style Belly Dance at Creative Grove Under Siege, Jersey City, N.J., June 24, 2011. Creative Grove Under Siege is a day of music and performances at the Creative Grove Artist & Designer Market at Grove Street, Jersey City, presented by Sirelo Entertainment.

ATS is a modern dance form created in San Francisco by Carolena Nericcio, director of Fat Chance Belly Dance (www.fcbd.com). It combines traditional belly dance with modified movements inspired by the folkloric and tribal dances of cultures from India, the Middle East, North Africa and Spain.

ATS dancers use these movements, along with a series of non-verbal cues and step combinations, to create group performances that can look carefully choreographed but are actually completely improvised.
