Adieu for guitar, supposedly but probably not by Schubert, certainly arranged from the original song, by Tarrega.
I recorded this in the belief that it was in fact from an original Schubert song. Having done so I went googling to find the Deutsche number - the catalogue system by which all Schubert's works are organised. It then turned out that in fact this is almost certainly a spurious attribution and not by Schubert at all! There are quite a few such things hanging around the margins of most composers' works so its nothing that unusual. It is still rather a nice piece though so I was not going to bin my efforts just because of this.
The recording was made using the reverb setting from the Schubert concert hall in Vienna from Altiverb. Guitar by Simon Ambridge, 2005. Mics by Hebden Sound.
Further data on the origin of the song;
This song is spurious - it is not actually by Schubert. It is listed in the Deutsch thematic catalog (1950 edition) under "Spurious and Doubtful works". According to Deutsch:
"The song was, in fact, composed by August Heinrich von Weyrauch, with words by Karl Friederich Gottlob Wetzel, and was published by the composer in 1824, under the title 'Nach Osten!' ('Nach Osten geht, nach Osten die Erde Flug'), together with other of his songs. It was re-published, this time separately, in 1846 by C.A. Challier & Co., Berlin."

  • so is this Schubert's work or Tarrega's original work?

  • @dalecampbl5; Description - ..." supposedly but probably not by Schubert, certainly arranged from the original song, by Tarrega". Tarrega would presumably not have known this was unlikely to be by Schubert. I thought it was until I tried to find its D (catalogue) number, which it does not have. So, composed by neither Schubert nor Tarrega. Somebody's inspired pastiche.

  • Hey, Could I get a copy of the sheet music to this? I've been looking everywhere and can't find it.

  • too bad Tarrega did not compose a guitar concerto...can you imagine how beautiful it would've been?

  • Lovely playing with a really nice sensitive touch. Thoroughly enjoyed that.

  • Perfect slurs and beautiful tone, the piece has a very emotional quality and the dark back drop fits the mood very well.

  • Beautiful playing Stephen, a lovely sensitive piece, handled to perfection. Hard work that is definitely not for the trash can!

  • JacarandaMusic Adieu 5/5 ★s
