The Singers, a choir based in Newcastle upon Tyne, rehearsing the German christmas carol Es ist ein Rose entsprungen by Michael Praetorius for their Xmas Concerts 2006.
A very happy Xmas and a peaceful and fulfilling 2009 to all.

Music: Cologne, 1599
Sung in German, English words:

See how a rose e'er blooming
From tender stem has sprung!
Of Jesse's lineage coming
As men of old have sung
It came, a floweret bright
Amidst the cold of winter
When half spent was the night

Isaiah 'twas foretold it
The rose I have in mind
With Mary we behold it
The Virgin Mother kind
To show God's love aright
She bore to us a Saviour
When half spent was the night

O Saviour, Child of Mary
Who felt our human woe
O Saviour, King of glory
Who does our weakness know
Bring us at length, we pray
To the bright courts of heaven
And to the endless day.

  • Whenever I hear this song I get a dry throat, my eyes well up and my lower lip begins to tremble. And this version is really beautifully performed to boot. Thanks.

  • @desideratusxsum I love this song, it makes me happy. Like you, it sometimes brings me to tears.

  • One of the greatest songs for Christmas! Many times when I hear this melody I think about the poor people in the world.

  • This is now one of my favorite Christmas songs!

  • Excellent German I understood (nearly) every word

  • One of the most beautiful pieces of music ever. Michael Praetorius's harmonization was simply perfect and cannot be improved upon. To hear "Es ist ein Ros' entsprungen" sung like this is heavenly.
