To change your name in Michigan, fill out the linked Petition For Legal Name Change, follow the instructions, provide the required info and payments, wait for your court date, show up to court date, file your order.

(If this is a change related to transition, list "personal preference" as your reason for requesting the name change, and bring a therapists letter explaining your transgender status with you to your court date.)

You ONLY need to spend money on a lawyer if your request is denied. Then you would hire a lawyer to appeal the denial. Or if you are having current legal problems. They want to make sure you aren't changing your name for fraudulent purposes. Don't waste your money if you don't have to folks...

If you've had Top Surgery, include a NOTARIZED letter from your Surgeon indicating that you have undergone an SRS procedure, and are being treated by a therapist for GID. Michigan will then allow you to change your gender marker. That way you can change both your name and gender marker at the same time, and save a little bit of money.

  • Great video! I just got top surgery and I'm going to change my gender on my birth certificate tomorrow, what a great feeling!

  • I had my name changed many years ago, and it also was quick and easy for me. I just presented a letter from my physician and psychologist saying that I was transgender. The judge granted it with no questions.
