A friend of mine had to turn steel that had been hardened. I think it was about c50 or so. The insert is made for this but the metal coming off sure was hot.

  • You have to take real small cuts. The cuttings are almost soft like steel wool though. Very weird.

  • i love the smooth finish hardened steel/tool steel leaves after being machined

  • it would be a bastard if you had to take off 1/2 inch with a .005 cut each time

  • @andhija Not really, the heat dehardens the steel and thus the cuttings are just ordinary steel

  • Ever caught a chip on the arm??

  • Is the insert ceramic or a CBN insert?

  • WOW! I didn't think they made inserts to cut like that.

    I would never want make a lathe do that, at least not while standing next to it.
