I was never the jealous type. Never. I was always happy for my friends when they got the new best thing before me, cause that was just the person I am. Me? No, I was never jealous. But now, now I wouldnt of thought I could be envious of the way someone walked. Walked!. That quickly changed when Joe strutted through the Café door.
It felt like the whole world stopped everything they were doing to look at him the second he got there. Immediately all of their heads slowly looked up to see the new body casually walking into the in the room. It seemed like they were trying to hide the fact that they were staring, but they knew. They all knew. The conversations everyone was having continued, but it was obvious who their focus was really on. I could feel the confused look on my face when I noticed the tension building up in my eyebrows. My eyes looked around from person to person, glancing at the way they looked at Joe. Worshipping him with their eyes. Thats when I had the thought that this would make a great scene in a movie. Ya know? The one where the popular kid comes strutting though the cafeteria with their posy behind them. The one where wind comes out of nowhere, and makes everything more dramatic then it actually is. Where the person looks like they have been practising their walk since the day they were born? Mhm, thats what this was. I think thats what made it more difficult for everyone to look away, and for some reason I couldn't either.
Joe walked so confidently, shoulders back, head help high, like nothing could stop him. He walked so swiftly, like he was on air. And that's what I was jealous of. I could never do that. Even the way he opened the door was graceful. It that were me, I would mix up the pull sign for pull. No doubt about it. He just continued to walk closer to his friends, while talking to Nick by his side, not even noticing all the attention. He had to know everyone in the room was staring at him right? Right? How could he not feel their stares on him?
I don't know why I let these thoughts even come into my head, I shouldn't care, It shoul— Then he smiled. A smile that made me take in a sharp unexpected breath. I felt the expression on my face melt, and I knew my eyes became soft. It was a beautiful smile. His cheeks rose high, and made his eyes look smaller, but still they were very noticeable. There was a playful, happy look in his eye, as he listened to something his brother was saying. It wasn't a fake, or forced, he was genuinely smiling. At that moment I wish I had never thought a single bad thing about him. Speaking of thoughts, what was I saying?
"Emma!" Darn, I did it again. "Can you let go of my wrist now?"
"Sorry.." I felt my cheeks flush as I slowly let go of Jessicas wrist and awkwardly straightened my shirt.
"Okay, thats like the fifth time today you zoned out on me, Ems whats wrong?" She asked concerned.
"Er, Im just.. " Im just what?! "..still trying to think of what Im forgetting."
"Nothing yet?" Her concern started to fade. That worked.
"Absolutely nothing." I sighed. I seriously couldn't remember.
"Well, let me know when it hits you."
Hoping she didnt notice me, I glanced up at Joe. He was now sitting with his friends, a grin still planted on his face. I felt a corner of my mouth twitch in a smile.
"Hey girls!" Said our casual friend Abby. She was in most of our classes.
"Hi Abby" I smiled at her as she sat next to me.
"What are we talking about?" she asked, as she rested an elbow on the table.
"Nothing exciting, believe me." Jessica said playfully looking in my direction.
"Blame it on me. why don't you." I returned the look.
"Fun..." Abby said with no enthusiasm.
Awkward silence.
"Oh! Before I forget, did you hear about the science project were apparently getting tomorrow? "That was totally like Abby, ahead of all her school work. She was very smart.
"We started school today! "Jessica slumped. Then suddenly there was an appalled look on Abbys face.
"Ignore her, continue." I said.
"I heard its a group project, so Im thinking the three of us team up? That model we did together last year turned our great." Abby reminded us with a cheeriness to her voice. "And then Im sure you guys can come over my place to work on it, I just redid my study room!" She pushed her glasses up a bit. I knew she didnt need our assistance. She could easily do it on her own.
"Im in." Jess sat back up. I laughed.
"Whats the topic?" I asked. Maybe it will be something easy like...grow a plan.
"Human body, essay plus presentation." Abby said, way too happily.
"Oh, that cant be tha --"
Shock rushed through me as I felt a weird, squirmy, followed by a wet feeling between my legs. The horrified look on my face was obvious by the reaction on Jessicas. I knew right then and there what I forgot this morning.
