Case study on 32 bit and 64bit performance:
Windows XP Professional SP3 [32bit]
Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 [64bit]: benchmarking under both x86 [WOW64 aka Windows on Windows 64bit aka 32bit emulation] and under native 64bit.

Testing environment:
NLE: Sony Vegas Pro 8.0c [32bit] and Sony Vegas Pro 8.1 [64bit]
Capture device: Canon XH A1
File format: HDV capture [.m2t] [MPEG-2 transport stream]
Aspect ratio: 1440x1080i
Frame rate: 29.970 fps
Audio: Stereo 48,000 Hz MPEG layer 2
Length: 1 minute 39 seconds
Encode/Render to: Microsoft HD WMV @ 1280x720p @ 30 fps

A few extras done to my 32bit system prior to the start:
Defrag
Disk Clean Up
AntiVirus disabled
All uneeded processes were turned off
* I assembled this system July '07 so it still has decent performance........or so I thought.

  • IridiumVIII, great vid what do I need to buy or download to make 32 bit run like 64bit ? I am thinking of buying a i7-640M dual core that has 32bit.

    Thanks so much,

    MD

  • @farstarfilms - Technically speaking - all you would need to do is buy and install or upgrade to a 64bit operating system. The Core i7 CPUs are 64bit based. You'll also need to make sure that there are 64bit version drivers available for your system as well.

  • How do i start WOW64

  • WoW64 starts whenever you run a 32bit application on a 64bit operating system/platform.

  • Hi, your video is good, but could you please explain me how to install wow64? I just have no idea.

    I need it really much.

    Thank you.

  • I believe any 64bit version of Vista contains WoW64. It's what allows you to install and run 32bit programs and applications on your 64bit Windows based PC. It's an emulator basically -

  • Here's the results if you don't want to sit through the video before commenting!

Same PC running Vista 64bit so these results are comparable, i.e. this is the difference between 32 bit and 64 bit Vegas on the "same" PC.

    Vegas 8.0c 32bit = 4m 35s

    Vegas 8.1 64 bit = 4m 13s

Older PC running XP. This is not comparable to the above, it only shows the gain in going from a Dual core 3Ghz AMD system to a Quad Core 2.83Ghz Intel system above.

    Vegas 8.0c = 15m 8s

  • Why are you comparing 32 bit and 64 bit when the 64 bit system has more power than the 32 bit system hardware wise anyway? -_-

  • @IridiumVIII drivers well if they have i7's laptops same brand with 64bit then they should drivers right hmm how can I find this out ?

  • Funny its more then XP vs. Vista -.-

  • Isn't WOW64 only featured in Windows Professional and Ultimate Editions?

  • How well does it work under Win serv 2008r2 on a itanium machine?

  • where do you get wow 64

  • WoW64 is native to most 64bit versions of Windows Operating Systems. It's basically an emulator of sorts. It allows you to install and run 32bit applications on a 64bit platform.
