Buttonwillow NCRC 11/21/2010 - Mazda3 engine failure

Stock Mazda3 engine w/ Mazdaspeed coilovers and GT2871R turbo, running in the solo group because it was my first time at this track. The car ran amazingly on the turbo kit without problems for 2.5 years, but decided this was its last session. Engine dies with a pop and some rattling at 4:59, luckily it happened in the esses and I was able to coast quickly off the track and into the parking lot without interrupting the session at all.

Yep, a rod failed. It was nearly 100º F ambient temps and I was pushing it super hard with the new close-ratio gearset keeping it under full boost the whole time, this combination was the nail in the coffin. I'm still happy with the reliability that I had with this turbo kit on the stock block for so long.

Unlucky :( It looked RAPID before your problem though! I take it you noticed a big difference with the GT28 over the standard turbo? Coilovers look good too. I love the gauges, I wasn't willing to fork out nearly £200 for the pod gauge though thanks to high postage to England.
