It is 1:30pm and cars stand bumper to bumper in the posh residential area of Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Block 10. As the cars move inch by inch, parents roll down their windows and call out the names of their children to the gatekeepers of schools in the locality.
The area was once reserved for residential purposes only, but schools gave sprung up all over the locality during the last two decades. While residents complain that it is impossible for them to leave their houses in the peak morning and afternoon hours, schools argue that in the absence of amenity plots, which the government fails to provide them, they have nowhere to go.
There have been times when residents have filed in cases against schools in the high court, under article 24 of the constitution which protects their property rights. However, it is difficult for residents to win, as article 25a, which grants citizens the right to education holds much more value for the judiciary. Schools generally get the benefit of "being of greater good to the society".
A very brave and truly presented story about School Mafia in Pakistan.
