The plot for "The Sad Cafe" centers on Jack (played by Brad Fowler), a hired gun for the underworld, who finds himself falling for a waitress (Katie Lanigan). Jack finds himself torn between the power of his newfound emotions and the responsibilities posed by a strict code to which he has vowed allegiance. The code was inspired by the Samurai code of Bushido.

"Bennie had me do a lot of research," said Fowler. "I read the Bushido book, and much of the character's choices, the majority of what he does, and the conflict he faces with the people that he loves is a direct effect of following this code. He's conflicted with what his wants might be, but because of this code, he's forced to do things that go against what he might necessarily want. I definitely would classify [the film] as a love story. It's been a pretty heavy meaty role, and I'm tired. Emotionally, there's a lot of holding on and having desire to seek revenge."
