"Take Five" was one of the rare instances that a pure jazz instrumental recording was able to breach the pop Top 40 during the rock era, and it went to #25 in September of 1961. The song was composed by one of the quartet, Paul Desmond, who plays alto sax along with Dave Brubeck's piano. "Take Five" is one of the giants of jazz recordings.
